Hot Foil Printing & Debossing

Versatile, easy to use with no messy inks!

Hot foil printers or hot foil stamping machines have long been used to add something to printed products that no other printing process can - shiny gold, silver and other metallic colours! However, nowadays hot stamping foils are available in a myriad of finishes and many special effect foils, gloss foils and others finishes are now available in addition to the more traditional gold and silver finishes. The process hot foil printers use is totally dry (because no ink is involved) and it is quick to learn. Hot foil printers allow you a simple way to add an impressive touch to any item and it is amongst the most profitable printing methods for personalising promotional items.

How does a hot foil printer work?

Traditional hot foil printing machines, also referred to as hot foil stamping machines or hot stamping machines for short, use either a metal printing plate (die) or traditional printing type in the form of loose letters to hot stamp the required image onto the product. The process begins with the production of a printing plate, or the setting of type (generally used when only initials, names or short areas of text will be printed). Once the printing die has been produced, it is placed on the heated print-head of the hot foil stamping machine and brought up to temperature. Using a combination of heat, pressure and dwell time, the design is transferred from the die or type, through the coloured foil and onto the product. The entire hot foil printing cycle takes less than a second per item (excluding the time to locate and remove the item from the machine).

There are a few products that do not lend themselves to being printed with hot foil printers, such as - products made from metal, glass or ceramic substrates. If you would like to print such items you will need to consider buying a manually operated pad printer or manually operated rotary screen printer. Alternatively you can consider a semi automatic pad printing or semi automatic cylindrical screen printing system. In general, products suitable for hot foil printers are usually flat in profile, although it is also possible to produce shaped printing plates and appropriate tooling for more complex industrial applications.

What is toner foiling?

A new breed of hot foil printing systems have been around for the last few years and instead of the traditional format hot foil stamping machine, these hot foil printers will allow you to foil paper and light card stock without the need to produce expensive printing plates. The process converts a black laser printed image into a foiled image by fusing foil to the surface of the toner printed by the laser or photocopier. Our machine can handle image areas of up to A3 size. If this sounds interesting, please take time to read about the Foilmax toner foiling system.

How do I personalise individual details or variable data using foil printing?

Sometimes, clients have a requirement to print variable data onto products and until recently, hot foil printing as a process was unsuitable for this application. However, with the development of the Impress digital hot foil printing system, it is now possible for individual personalisation to be offered on most substrates that are suitable for hot foil printing. The Impress system is connected directly to a Windows based computer and acts just like a desktop printer - all the user has to do is load and unload products from the machine. Data can be imported into programme's such as Corel or Adobe Illustrator and output quickly and simply.
