In July 2017 Douglas Grigar once again joined us to teach a screen printing class and screen printing bags was just one small part of the very full two-day syllabus. This year we decided to offer smaller businesses the opportunity of coming on a two day class over a weekend which was very well received. It was a huge challenge condensing the content of the normal three day course into two days, but the end result was some very happy students and a weekend well spent.
Beechfield Brands very kindly sponsored goody bags for the students, which introduced them to the range of high quality bags from Westford Mill and Bagbase. Students each screen printed several different bags which was good additional experience and of course a great business idea now that the UK is moving away from using disposable plastic bags in supermarkets. High quality screen printed carrier bags offer small screen printing businesses a great opportunity for additional income and with the wide range of options available there is sure to be something to suit the taste and budget of every potential client.
The class covered a whole lot more than just screen printing bags and students got to grips with every step of the production process from preparing the screens, coating the screens, exposing the artwork, setting up of the press, printing onto both bags and t-shirts with various designs during the two days and ultimately the joyful task of cleaning up under the watchful guidance of master screen printer Douglas Grigar. When you are taught the right way of doing even the least favourite tasks like cleaning up, it becomes much less of a messy hassle and part of a streamlined production.
Here is a short video clip of the students screen printing bags during the class.
